Our Church History

Our Heritage

The First United Methodist Church of Cedar Hill was founded in 1854 and is one of the oldest Methodist Churches in North Texas.  In 1856, a tornado blew away the church, as well as most of Cedar Hill. In 1883, the church bought property at the current location.  In 1900, three more lots were purchased and the current sanctuary was constructed.  The original four-foot bell still summons worshippers on Sunday morning.

In 1980, the Family Life Center (FLC) was constructed and serves as the center of many church and community activities.

In 1996, Wesley Hall was completed.  Nursery facilities and childrens' classrooms are located here, as well as the church administrative offices.

In 1997, the church completed purchase of all property to Belt Line Road between Roberts and Potter Streets. This provides the land for future growth.

In 1998, the Historic Sanctuary was updated with refinished pews and new carpeting and the back part of the building was remodeled and restored with period style furnishings.  It has a Bride's Parlor with bathroom and complete kitchen facilities.  In addition to weddings, it is used for showers, receptions, and Bible studies.

In 2004, a New Sanctuary was constructed and serves as the center of our worship services including the 11 AM worship service.

Historic Sanctuary Organ

The story begins in 1987 when the Pastor (Dr. Mike Daves) received information that two churches in West Texas were about to be closed and that each had a used pipe organ. The informant indicated that they were available for the taking; that the interested party would only have to disassemble and remove them from their location prior to each church’s closure. A visit by the Pastor and a team of church members concluded that it was a worth-while endeavor. The team with suitable tools and transportation made the return trip to disassemble both units and return to Cedar Hill.

The arrival back in Cedar Hill ended at member Barney Barnett’s barn where all the salvaged components were stored until a plan could be formulated.

Contact was made with a Dr. Ivan Danhoff, a physician whose hobby was building pipe organs. Consultation with Dr. Danhoff concluded that it was possible to construct an instrument for our church from the inventory of salvaged items.

Contract negotiations and donations of funds in the required amounts allowed the project to begin in 1988. The contracted amount for the project was $13,195.00 and the results spoke for themselves.

On October 22, 1989 the organ was formally dedicated by Dr. Judson Maynard, Professor of Organ and Theory, Texas Tech University, and Ms. Polly Maynard, Adjunct Professor of Guitar, University of North Texas.

Dr. Danhoff and son continued to provide support and additional improvements to the organ for a period of time after the dedication. Others have provided maintenance and repairs as needed.
